Elon Musk, Twitter, and his god complex
Psychology has something to help us predict what happens with this Elon Musk situation. Carl Jung described a phenomenon called ‘mana-personality.’ (Mana describes god-like qualities, often in sacred objects — you may be familiar with it from role-playing video games.)
When someone is highly revered by others, they become a hero (this is normal). However, in some people, the ego becomes hyperamplified under these conditions, and the person starts to believe they’re all powerful (like a god). Of course, no human is a god, so acting like one usually doesn’t end well.
For Elon, this will likely end in one of two ways:
1) The better way — Something/someone helps Elon realize he’s acting outside of his actual control of the situation and he changes himself, or
2) The bad way — His behaviour keeps escalating until a catastrophe he can’t ignore forces a change, but not without a whole lot of damage.
Look back at any story of leaders or celebrities acting badly, and you'll find the mana-personality phenomenon. Anytime someone experiences a long period of adoration and no consequences for bad behavior, look out.
