How did you know what your job was?

This post is part of a longer series for Product Managers and Directors of Product taking a comprehensive look at all areas of the craft. All posts are available at markrabo.com/product-alchemy.

You show up to work every day and fill your day with tasks. How did you determine what those were?

Are those things what Product Management is, or just what your company considers it to be?

Are you doing the same things PMs did in 1931 when the discipline was created?

Will you be doing the same thing in a few years when generative AI reaches scale?

To answer these questions and adapt to change, you need to understand your role in a deeper way — you might say you need to understand the philosophy of Product Management. In this video I create a more comprehensive definition of Product Management that helps start thinking about the craft at a deeper level. With this we can look ahead at coming changes and figure out how to work within it.

The people who do the most interesting work can hold the todo list, the philosophy, and the changing world in view at all times.

I have 15 years experience building products and high-functioning teams in consumer apps and games. This series is free — share anywhere. Find all posts at markrabo.com.
